A Twitter account owned by Suntory Beer has twitted a tweet introducing new commercial message starring Kiko Mizuhara and many comments have been posted against the tweet. Some are blaming Suntory Beer for using Kiko Mizuhara as a brand ambassador, and others are to condemn those hate comments against Suntory Beer and Kiko Mizuhara as a discrimination. It caused fierce controversy in Japan.
Originally Kiko Mizuhara’s father is American and mother is Korean and she grew up in Japan from 2 years old. Currently Korean people are not welcomed by some Japanese people because of bad relationship between Japan and Korean. Additionally when Kiko Mizuhara made a disturbance in China last year about worshipping at the Yasukuni Shrine, taking a photo in front of the Rising‐Sun flag, putting like on a photo taken at Tenanmon with the finger, she uploaded a video to a website Myaopai for excusing yourself. She explained about misleading for some incidents in the video and also told that she is half American and half Korean, not Japanese. The way to excuse like refusing being Japanese made some Japanese people angry.
Many celebrities have reacted about this discussion and most of them are supporting Suntory Beer and Kiko Mizuhara. But some people say, if she insists that she’s not Japanese and complain about Japanese people’s attitude, she should work in other countries, but actually she’s earning money in Japan using Japanese name. And also some say that there’re many celebrities from other countries working in Japan and they’re welcomed fully, so her own aggressive behaviors or comments are true reason of hate comments on the tweet.
Discrimination is never allowed whatever the reason.
