A Japanese national TV broadcasting association “Nippon Hoso Kyokai” known as “NHK” has revealed the list of the artists who will attend its 2017-2018 New Year Red and White Music Festival “Kohaku Utagassen” held on new year’s eve.
Kohaku Utagassen is a traditional, beloved TV program watched by many Japanese people, and it makes them feel the end of the year. Male and female singers sing their songs by turn. Male singers are included in White group, female singers are in Red group. At the end of the TV program, some judges and viewers vote which group is better, and settle which group wins.
It recorded more than 80 percent at the rating of viewers of the program in 1960’s. Though last year’s rating of the program was around 40 percent, it’s still high compare to other TV programs. Because recently, the average rating of viewers of whole TV programs are declining due to the pervasiveness of the internet.
NHK has revealed the list of singers who will join the music festival on November 16, 2017. And at the same time, they also announced hosts of the music festival. The host of Red group will be a Japanese popular young actress Kasumi Arimura who acted a main actress in TV drama series “Hiyokko” broadcasted by NHK, the host of White group will be Kazuya Ninomiya from a popular boys idol group Arashi. Teruyoshi Uchimura belonging comedy duo Ucchan-Nanchan will chair the festival overall.
