Japanese Kentucky Fried Chicken so-called KFC and casual dining chain restaurants Denny’s has decided to prompt a total ban of smoking in their restaurants.
KFC and Denny’s has already implemented rooms for smokers. But recently, customers who don’t like smoking started to complain about the smoke leaked from the room. And waiters and waitresses of those restaurant, especially part time worker, has begun to avoid working at places which have smoking room due to the foul smell and the bad effects of second hand smoking. In these days, most of Japanese companies suffer from a shortage of employees due to decreasing birthrate and aging population. So those two restaurants could’t have a choice to keep the smoking rooms left.
Actually, the food restaurant industry has insisted for a long time that, the most of restaurants, bars and cafes which allow customers to smoke will lost many customers if Japanese government legislates a law of prohibiting smoking in all restaurants. But according to Japan Tobacco Inc. a.k.a JT, smoking people in Japan stand for 28.2 percent of men and 9.0 percent of women as of 2017. This investigation shows that most of the people don’t welcome smoking. But lobbying activities by the food restaurant industry had interrupted the legislation of the smoking ban law for a long time.
But ironically, KFC and Denny’s were forced to decide to remove smoking rooms by their own circumstance without a smoking ban law. MacDonald, casual dining restaurant Loyal Host, Starbucks Coffee hasn’t already had smoking rooms, Italian chain restaurant Saizeriya also has non-smoking branches in Tokyo, Saitama, Chiba and Kanagawa prefectures.
Many people hope that the decision by KFC and Denny’s will prompt the movement of a total smoking ban in every restaurant for Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic games in 2020.
