Japanese Jail located in Yamaguchi prefecture has started to sell drawings written by its prisoners. Those are sold in a website “Mangaka Honpo(Comic writer shop)” opened in April 2017. People who saw the drawings are surprised at its high quality.
Rehabilitation promotion center, which is called “Shakai Fukki Sokushin Center” in Japanese language, asked Takumi Shibuya to teach its prisoners how to draw background image used in manga like cars, bicycles, buildings etc.
Takumi Shibuya has been writing manga for 35 years with his pen name Ryo Snoba, and got awarded by Japanese famous comic magazine Shone Jump when he is 25 years old. At first he just helped his friend teaching prisoners how to make flyers or brochures at the rehabilitation center. One day he tried to teach how to draw background image used in manga but most of prisoners gave up writing it on the way. He thought it’s like their life ever, they might be able to know a pleasure to accomplish something if they can finish it completely. That’s the reason Takumi Shibuya started to teach how to write it.
As time goes on, prisoners became serious for writing, the number of questions asked by them increased as he expected. And also they started to communicate each other for talking about drawings. Finally Takumi Shibuya used the background images written by them in his comic and the prisoners were pleased with that.
Now all of the prisoners he taught in first batch have already out from the rehabilitation center. He doesn’t know where they are now because personal communication is prohibited in the center. His new team has started on September 12 and there are many questions about drawing during 5 hours lesson.
