Heisei Shogi Gassen Pom Poko, which is a software to play shogi, won the Shogi Denou Tournament Game. It defeated formidable rivals Ponanza and shutgun.
The 5th Shogi Denou Tournament Game was held by Dwango, which is a company running Japanese popular video sharing web service Nico Nico Douga, at an event space nicofarre located in Roppongi on November 11 and 12, 2017. Shogi is known as Japanese chess, Denou means a an electron king in Japanese. Heisei Shogi Gassen Pom Poko defeated Ponanza, which is a previous year’s champion, at semifinal game, shutgun at final game.
The name of the software “Heisei Shogi Gassen Pom Poko” originates from an animation movie “Heisei Tanuki Gassen Pom Poko” filmed by a Japanese prominent director Hayao Miyazaki. Heisei means Heisei era, Japan has Japanese era name along with the Christian era. For example, this year is 2017, and also Heisei 29th in Japanese era. A Japanese era name is changed when a Japanese emperor changes. Tanuki means raccoon dogs, Pom Poko is a common name used as a name of raccoon dogs often.
Akio Kawano and Hisayori Noda developed the software Heisei Shogi Gassen Pom Poko, and won 3 million dollars as the prize money. The software which won the tournament game is expected to play shogi with professional shogi players of humans. Softwares which won the Shogi Denou Tournament Game, fought with professional shogi players twice in the past, and softwares have defeated them twice.
