A Japanese toy maker Bandai Co., Ltd. has announced that they will release the fist generation of Tamagotchi as its 20th anniversary in 2017.
Bandai is a major multinational toy producer which has become popular by selling plastic models of Gumdam also called “Gunpla”, toys or goods of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and Tamagotchi etc. Bandai also made some popular characters animated like Strawberry Shortcake and The Bellflower Bunnies, and manufactured the toys of those animations. Because broadcasting TV programs for kids are the best way to promote the sales of toys. Their business model is called “Character Merchandising”.
Tamagotchi is a digital device that makes users have a virtual pet, with monochromatic 1.5 inch screen, released in 1996 at first. User can take care of their pets like feeding, curing diseases, turning the light off, and playing game with them. It became social phenomenon all over the world. Not only Japanese celebrities but Hollywood stars had it, 82 million units has been sold so far. Bandai has also released many kinds of Tamagotchi ever, which have color screen or infrared transmission feature. Pets can get married and have a baby taking over the parents personality in the later version. Additionally, the first generation of Tamagotchi had only 7 kinds of pets in it, but the latest version of Tamagotchi named “Tamagotch mix” has over tens of million species totally.
Bandai will release the first generation Tamagotchi to commemorate the 20th anniversary on November 23, 2017. The price’s 2,916 yen, around 30 dollars.
